Few things are as rewarding as adding much needed power steering to the FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser. There are many ways to accomplish this:
FJ40 Saginaw PS Conversion
The FJ40 Saginaw Power Steering Conversion method typically utilizes a saginaw gearbox from a car installed in a manner similar to a Jeep. While it is a fairly strong gearbox there are several problems with this: the installation requires cutting a massive hole in the front crossmember, it is incompatible with PTO use, incompatible with some v8 installations, incompatible with some winch installations, incompatible with some suspension installations, and leaves gearbox hanging below front bumper highly exposed to damage. This is not a good choice for a PS conversion.
FJ40 Minitruck PS Conversion
The FJ40 Minitruck Power Steering Conversion method essentially replaces the factory non power gearbox and it's mount with a new mount and a 79-85 4wd Toyota Truck power steering gearbox. While it is a simple and cheap conversion it has several problems: the gearbox is not strong enough for large tires, the relay rod in the driver wheel well is retained and presents interference problems with shocks and tire clearance, it does not eliminate wear points meaning you still have to service two additional TRE's and the center arm.
FJ40 Factory PS Conversion
The FJ40 Factory Power Steering Conversion simply involves replacing the non power gearbox with a power gearbox. Simple, yet not without problems: the factory FJ40 power steering gearboxes are very difficult to find and when you do find them they are expensive, the gearbox is not suited for large tires, the relay rod in the driver wheel well is retained and presents interference problems with shocks and tire clearance, it does not eliminate wear points meaning you still have to service two additional TRE's and the center arm. There are better options, however, if you are doing a factory restoration this is a must have conversion and we can supply you with the necessary parts - please call for details.
FJ60 PS Conversion
At Iron Pig Off Road our experienced techs recomend the method commonly referred to as the FJ60 Power Steering Conversion. This system utilizes the much stronger gearbox from the larger FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser and is suitable for use with very large tires. (Ram Assist can also be added very easily, though it is not necessary) It eliminates the center arm, relay rod and both of the associated TREs to yield a highly reliable system with a true factory Toyota feel at the steering wheel. The gearbox resides in the wheel well, far from any tire or shock interference and well out of harms way. This is by far the best power steering conversion for an FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser.
