Winch Cables A vehicle recovery winch is a great step towards independence, but needs to be used in conjunction with the right top-quality accessories for safety and recovery capability. All the hardware you use should be of the best construction, and you should know how to use it. Your wire rope winch cable will eventually wear out, and should be considered a consumable. When you replace it, make sure you replace it with the best. Winch cables can also break, but can be spliced and repaired using the cable repair clips available from us, and by following these instructions: |
| Step 1. Turn back the specified amount of rope from the thimble. Apply the first clip one base width from the dead end of the wire rope (U-bolt over dead end - line end rests in clip saddle). Tighten nuts evenly to recommended torque. For a 5/16" cable (Warn 8274, XD9000, XD9000i), use a minimum of 3 clips, turn back 7 1/2" of rope, and use 15ft-lbs of torque. For a 3/8" cable (Warn M1000, M12000), use at least 3 clips, turn back 9 1/2" rope, and torque nuts to 30ft-lbs. | ![]() |
| Step 2. Apply the next clip as near the loop as possible. Turn on nuts firm, but do not tighten. | ![]() |
| Step 3. Space additional clips equally between the first two. Take up rope slack. Tighten all nuts evenly to recommended torque. | ![]() |
| NOTICE - Apply the initial load and retighten nuts to the recommended torque. Rope will stretch and shrink in diameter when loads are applied. Inspect periodically and retighten. The tightening torque values are based upon the threads being clean, dry and free of lubrication. | |
